About Our Choral Program
Charles A. Sprague High School, located in southwest Salem, is a four-year high school with an enrollment of 1,800 students. The school is named for Charles A. Sprague, who was a former governor of Oregon. The school opened in the fall of 1972 and is one of six public high schools in the Salem-Keizer School District. Oregon’s second largest school district, Salem-Keizer has long been recognized for its outstanding music programs.
The Choral Program at Sprague High involves over 200 students in 5 different choirs including Men’s and Women’s Choirs, Ensemble, Concert Choir, and Framework, the advanced vocal jazz ensemble. Each of the choirs perform numerous times throughout the year at various public concerts, festivals, and competitions.
Choir at Sprague continues a rich tradition of musical excellence in the Salem-Keizer school district and is a Grammy Signature School.

Ensembles
Men's Chorus
The Men’s Chorus at Sprague High School is open to any male singer at Sprague from 9-12 grade.
In this group we focus on:
- the instruction of sound vocal technique as it applies to the male voice
- music fundamentals including basic music reading skills, key signatures, and scales
- the performance of high-quality choral music
- the development of independence in the individual singer.
Male Section Leaders and Choir Council members are also expected to perform in this ensemble.
Successful participation in the Men’s Chorus qualifies the singer to be able to audition for the advanced choruses.
Women's Chorus
The Women’s Chorus at Sprague High School is the entry level choral experience for all female singers.
In this group we focus on:
- the instruction of sound vocal technique as it applies to the female voice
- music fundamentals including basic music reading skills, key signatures, and scales
- the performance of high-quality choral music
- the development of independence in the individual singer
Successful participation in Women’s Chorus qualifies the singer to be able to audition for the advanced choruses.
Ensemble
Ensemble is an intermediate mixed choir.
Students from 9-12 grades are eligible to participate. Membership is by audition only and students wishing to audition successfully should be familiar with key signatures, know how to sing scales, and have good sight singing skills. This group performs on and off campus at a variety of concerts and festivals.
Membership in Ensemble also carries an after-school rehearsal requirement of one day per week.
Concert Choir
The Sprague High School Concert Choir is one of five choral ensembles that continue a long tradition of choral singing at Sprague High School.
Comprised of 50-60 singers, the Concert Choir has performed at national, state, and regional conventions of Music Educators National Conference and American Choral Directors Association. Sprague choirs have toured the northwest, Canada, California, Florida, New York, and Hawaii. The choir has received many accolades and honors including 1st place trophies at the OSAA/ACDA State Choir Championships and the “Best of the Northwest” Choral Festival at the University of Portland. In addition, the music department at Sprague has been selected numerous times as a Grammy Signature School by the GRAMMY foundation.
The primary focus of the Concert Choir is exceptional performance of high-quality choral music in a variety of genres. Emphasis is also placed on attaining advanced sight singing skills. Singers in the Concert Choir should be comfortable singing alone and in small groups as a regular part of ensemble rehearsal.
Entrance into Concert Choir is by audition only and after successful work is demonstrated in one of the younger choirs.
